Mecca Masjid

The Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad, is the biggest mosque in South India, and one of the oldest. The first child of Sultan Mohammad (Golconda's sixth Sultan) and his queen Hayat Bakshi, was born under an inauspicious star, and the Sultan and the prince were forbidden from looking at each other's faces for 12 years.

It was suggested to the Sultan that constructing a mosque may lift the curse. And that was how the construction of this huge mosque began. It was a very ambitious project , but it progressed very slowly- it wasn't completed in the lifetimes of the Sultan and his two successors, and eventually ran out of funds. After more than 75 years, Aurangzeb, after he conquered Hyderabad, sanctioned the money needed to complete the mosque.

Some pictures I shot yesterday as the sun went down behind the masjid. The light was changing so fast, it was fun :)
